Kuwait City, April 10 – The conflict-torn Middle East region has witnessed rising tensions in recent weeks as key regional actors have sharpened their rhetoric in preparation for a possible Iran-backed conflict. In a recent address, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami, threatened to strike at the heart of any nation that dares to harm Iran.
Analysts say Tehran’s warning is likely targeted at Saudi Arabia and other regional powers, particularly in light of the recent deployment of advanced missile defense systems by the United States in the Middle East. While Iran’s foreign minister has repeatedly dismissed the notion of war, Iranian state media has repeatedly cited US and Israeli military presence in the region as an immediate threat to the country’s sovereignty.
Tensions escalated further following a recent attack on a Saudi oil facility that was attributed to the Houthis – a rebel group in Yemen who have long been accused of being backed by Iran. Riyadh and Washington quickly blamed Tehran for the assault, a charge the Iranian government denied.
The conflict has seen an escalation of proxy wars across the region in recent years, including ongoing conflicts in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. These regional clashes have drawn in regional heavyweights such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey as each vie for influence.
According to a senior regional security official speaking to our correspondent: ‘It’s all out chaos and the regional players don’t know how to contain it. No one is willing to take the first step back, it seems we’re heading towards all out confrontation.’
Tehran has consistently maintained that its military presence and influence in the region is purely to bolster its allies and protect Shia communities. However many fear that Iran’s true intention is to exert regional dominance and assert its interests through military power.
The US has warned of possible military action against Iran in response to a reported attack on its interests. Meanwhile US president Biden held a call with Saudi king Salman to coordinate a unified response to Iran-backed threats.
