Washington D.C. – In a move that is likely to heighten tensions in the region, US President Donald Trump has announced “Project Freedom,” a military operation that will see American ships escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The operation is set to begin on Monday morning.
The announcement came in a statement from the White House, where President Trump emphasized the importance of keeping international shipping lanes open and safeguarding global trade. “We cannot permit the Iranian regime to threaten our allies and partners with impunity,” the President said, adding that the US will do everything necessary to protect American interests and those of its allies.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with nearly 20% of the world’s total oil exports passing through it. The narrow waterway is also a sensitive area, given its proximity to Iran and the presence of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a paramilitary force that has been at odds with the US over its military presence in the region.
The US has accused Iran of being responsible for a series of attacks on oil tankers and cargo ships in recent months, including a sabotage operation that targeted several vessels off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Iran has denied any involvement in the incidents, but has threatened to take action against US ships in the region if they do not respect its territorial waters.
The launch of “Project Freedom” has been welcomed by some of the US’s closest allies in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “We appreciate the US commitment to securing the maritime lanes,” said a spokesperson for the Saudi government. However, the move is likely to be met with resistance from Iran and its allies, who see the US as a destabilizing force in the region.
The operation is expected to see a naval force of at least eight US warships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines, deploying to the Strait of Hormuz on Monday morning. The US has also been carrying out airstrikes against militia positions in Iraq and Syria in recent weeks, in an effort to weaken Iranian influence in the region.
As the situation in the Gulf continues to deteriorate, analysts warn that the risk of military confrontation between the US and Iran has never been higher. “The situation is extremely volatile,” said a defense expert, who spoke to Faytuks News on condition of anonymity. “We should be bracing ourselves for the possibility of a major conflict in the coming weeks.”
