A senior Iranian military commander has declared that Iran fully controls and will strongly secure the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a major waterway through which approximately 30% of the world’s oil exports pass. The statement was made in response to recent assertions by the United States and other nations that they will ensure the free flow of oil through the strait.
Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force, warned that any foreign military – particularly the United States – approaching the strait could be subject to attack. He stressed that Iran will not tolerate any threats to its sovereignty over the strait and will respond with force to any challenges to its control.
“In the Strait of Hormuz, we are the one and only authorities, and no one else can be allowed anywhere there,” General Hajizadeh said, according to Fars News, an Iranian news agency. “If the Americans want to show off their power, let them first show it in the Strait of Hormuz,” he added, making clear that any military action by the US or its allies will be met with severe consequences.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, has long been a source of tension between Iran and other nations. Iran has repeatedly warned that any attempt to block or disrupt the flow of oil through the strait would be met with severe retaliation. The US, in particular, has been accused of attempting to undermine Iranian influence in the region and has imposed a series of economic sanctions on the country.
In response to General Hajizadeh’s statement, US officials have reiterated their commitment to maintaining the free flow of oil through the strait and have warned that any Iranian attempt to restrict oil shipments will be met with force. However, the US has thus far refrained from taking any overt military action in the region, citing concerns over the potential for escalation.
The Iranian military’s assertion of control over the Strait of Hormuz comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and Iran. The US has accused Iran of supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen and of threatening US allies in the region, while Iran has accused the US of attempting to undermine its sovereignty and destabilize the region.
As the situation continues to escalate, the implications for global oil markets and regional stability remain uncertain. While many observers believe that Iran’s assertion of control over the Strait of Hormuz is meant to deter foreign military action, others see it as a brazen challenge to the international community. Whatever the case, it is clear that the Strait of Hormuz will remain a hotbed of tension and a major concern for the international community for the foreseeable future.
