Iran Sees Return of TOSKA Ship Crew as US Relaxes Hold on Vital Medical Supplies

Islamabad/Karachi, April 30, 2026 – In a swift diplomatic exchange, the Government of Pakistan has facilitated the handover of the Iranian crew of the TOSKA ship to their country of origin. The transfer of the crew, who were temporarily held in Pakistan following the ship’s seizure by the United States Navy, is set to take place as scheduled today.

According to a press conference held by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Pakistan, a statement was released stating that Iran, the intended destination of the medical aid, requested that Pakistan facilitate the handover of the crew. In response, Pakistan cooperated with the request and ensured the safe transfer of the crew to Iran.

The TOSKA ship, which was carrying a consignment of dialysis equipment and other vital medical supplies, was seized by the US Navy in international waters earlier this month. The move was widely criticized by the international community, particularly by the Government of Pakistan and the Iranian authorities, who argued that the action unfairly hindered the delivery of much-needed medical aid to Iran.

In response, the US Navy initially stated that the seizure of the ship was a precautionary measure to inspect the cargo. However, following intense diplomatic pressure from several countries, including Pakistan and Iran, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, the US released the cargo and allowed the ship to proceed to its destination. However, the crew remained in international waters pending resolution of the diplomatic issues between their country and the US.

The development is seen as a positive step by diplomats involved in the crisis talks, with many seeing it as a testament to the successful working of international diplomacy and cooperation in a time of crisis. While the incident has been resolved, it has also raised broader questions about maritime security, international law and the rights of nations to regulate and inspect cargo in international waters.

The TOSKA incident highlights the complexities of global trade and the delicate balance of power between nations, making it essential for policymakers and diplomats to work closely together to prevent such incidents in the future.
