A series of intense clashes between Iranian Government Forces and IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) Militias has been reported from the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan since early April. The confrontations, which began in response to increasing regional tensions, have resulted in a reported 37 fatalities and over 200 wounded personnel. This development has further escalated the country’s internal power struggle, where the IRGC has consistently demonstrated defiance against government control.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the violence initially began in the city of Mahabad on April 5th, when IRGC Militias confronted local Government Forces over alleged land seizures. As the situation spiralled, reinforcements were called in and fighting spilled into surrounding areas, including the provincial capital, Urmia.
Government officials claim that the IRGC Militias were attempting to exploit local ethnic tensions, pitting the predominantly Kurdish population against Iranian central authorities. In recent months, tensions in the northwestern region have increased as Kurdish activists and separatists have stepped up calls for greater autonomy or independence.
However, IRGC officials have rejected these allegations, contending that their forces were only seeking to quell what they described as “subversive and treasonous” activities. An IRGC spokesperson stated, “Our presence in the region is necessary to ensure regional security, as Kurdish extremist groups have for years threatened Iranian sovereignty.”
Regional experts warn that the clashes may signal the beginning of a wider conflict between the IRGC and the Iranian Government, which has been grappling with multiple crises since the nationwide protests in 2022. Analysts note that the IRGC has been increasingly assertive in recent years, consistently disregarding orders from the central authorities in Tehran.
Government Forces, bolstered by recent deliveries of military aid, have vowed to restore order in the region and maintain security along the Iran-Turkey border. However, regional sources fear that a prolonged and escalating conflict would exacerbate ethnic divisions, destabilize the region, and jeopardize Iran’s fragile economic recovery.
Tensions have also drawn the attention of neighboring countries, with Turkish officials expressing concern over the escalating violence in North-West Iran. Turkish Foreign Ministry officials have urged all parties to exercise restraint, highlighting the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The ongoing conflict in Iran’s northwestern region has sparked fears of a broader humanitarian crisis, as well-wishers scramble to provide aid and relief to those affected by the violence. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with diplomats in Tehran emphasizing the necessity of a peaceful resolution to this complex and volatile situation.
