SEOUL (Reuters) – A fire has broken out on one of South Korea’s largest shipping lines’ vessels, according to the company, with officials from the firm stating that it is unclear whether the blaze was caused by an attack at this stage.
As of now, there have been no fatalities or injuries reported on board the vessel, which is operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine Co Ltd. Details about the ship, including its cargo and destination, have not been released by the company.
In an official statement, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) indicated that the vessel was damaged by the fire, and while emergency services have been engaged, the cause of the blaze remains undetermined. Reuters sources have suggested that the cause of the fire is not confirmed to be arson or an act of terrorism, however, the South Korean Navy and intelligence services are conducting a review of any potential security threat associated with the incident.
The HMM operates a fleet of container ships that sail across the Asia-Europe trade lanes and serves some of the world’s most prominent ports. As one of South Korea’s main shipping companies, HMM transports cargo worth billions of dollars each year across the globe. Maritime security has raised heightened concerns, particularly for ships operating in sensitive regions, where attacks have been documented.
South Korea’s maritime security concerns stem from a number of incidents over the past year, with ships facing threats from a variety of sources, from pirate attacks off of Africa to hijacking of oil tankers by Iranian-affiliated groups in the Gulf. South Korean naval forces have strengthened their marine patrols to address safety concerns.
According to maritime monitoring services, a total of 30 vessels have been attacked since the start of 2022, in regions including the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
In a response to inquiries for further information, a HMM spokesperson confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details. As the cause and scope of the fire continue under investigation, officials have emphasized the importance of maritime safety and the potential for various explanations as to what may have contributed to the incident.
No further statements have been released on this matter at the time of publishing this article. South Korean maritime security agencies and global shipping lines are following the situation closely for any updates.
