Iran, April 24 – A statement issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has dismissed allegations by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) regarding an alleged incident involving US-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, April 23. The IRGC maintained that no US-flagged ships had crossed the strategic waterway.
In a release, the IRGC stated, “Recent claims by CENTCOM regarding the presence of US-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz are completely baseless and unfounded.” The statement continued, “We urge these nations not to trust the fantasies of the Americans, otherwise they will be stopped by force in reality.”
This exchange comes amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States over maritime security in the region. The dispute has raised concerns among international shipping companies and flag states regarding the safety and freedom of navigation in the vital trading route.
The IRGC has a history of seizing foreign vessels and detaining crew members for alleged breaches of maritime law. However, Washington and its allies have accused Tehran of using these seizures as a bargaining chip to exert influence in regional affairs.
CENTCOM, in its previous statement, alleged that Iranian forces had threatened to stop US-flagged vessels from transiting the Strait of Hormuz. However, neither side provided concrete evidence to support their claims.
The incident highlights the ongoing competition for influence in the region, with both sides jockeying for position. The IRGC, as the dominant force in Iran’s maritime security apparatus, has asserted its authority over the region, while CENTCOM has warned of the potential consequences of any Iranian aggression against US shipping.
In a statement to the press, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said, “The US has been resorting to false and unfounded claims to justify its naval presence in the region.” He also emphasized that Iran’s naval forces would continue to defend its borders and interests in the Strait of Hormuz.
As the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, diplomatic efforts are underway to ease tensions and prevent any further escalations. Meanwhile, international shipping companies and flag states continue to exercise caution, mindful of the risks and uncertainties that may arise in this critical trade artery.
The IRGC’s rejection of CENTCOM’s claims underscores the contentious nature of maritime security in the region, underscoring the need for sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation to ensure the free flow of maritime trade.
