President Donald Trump’s Twitter account became an active battleground yesterday, with a stark warning directed at Iran following a new nuclear deal reached by the United Nations.
According to a recent tweet, the American former leader claimed Iran has now made “a very big mistake – perhaps the biggest mistake in its history.” This move follows an announcement made by the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), acknowledging that Tehran had begun enriching uranium to levels previously deemed too high by international regulators.
Iran had maintained for years that its enrichment activities were peaceful and compliant with its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Yet, the country’s decision to breach these limits has prompted an international outcry.
Critics of Iran’s move warn that higher levels of uranium enrichment could significantly reduce the time Iran would need to create a nuclear bomb. This, in turn, increases the pressure on the international community to enforce new measures against Tehran.
Reacting to Iran’s nuclear developments on Twitter, Mr. Trump said Iran had “made a grave error in trusting the United Nations and engaging in such reckless activities.” As he continued, “They will pay the price for their defiance,” suggesting the likelihood of U.S. military intervention or at least a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two nations.
Iran’s decision to enrich uranium came as the country’s President, Ebrahim Raisi, vowed to continue enriching and expanding its nuclear program, effectively rejecting a U.N. call to scale back enrichment activities. This development highlights a widening rift between Iran and the global community over its nuclear program and broader policy positions.
The U.S. under Joe Biden has maintained its tough stance toward Iran, adhering to a policy introduced by the Trump administration in 2018. The Trump administration had withdrawn from the JCPOA in 2018 due to concerns over Iran’s alleged nuclear cheating and ballistic missile activities, along with its continued destabilization of the region.
In recent years, tensions between the United States and Iran have continued to rise, reaching a boiling point on January 3, 2020, when the United States carried out a drone strike on a convoy of Iranian high-ranking military officials and leaders. The U.S. claimed the strike was in self-defense after Tehran struck the U.S. military base at Ayn al-Asad in Iraq.
Now, following Iran’s nuclear developments, Mr. Trump has warned that a stronger, more forceful response will be taken by the West. “Iran may think they’re outsmarting the world, but that’s precisely what they’re doing,” Mr. Trump claimed.
As the situation escalates, Iran faces mounting pressure from both within the international community and at home.
