US Military Boosts Presence in Persian Gulf with Air Refuelling Operations

TEHRAN – Reports have emerged of US Air Force (USAF) refuelling activity in the Persian Gulf region, underscoring the continued build-up of American military presence in the strategic waterway. The operation comes as tensions between the US, Iran, and other regional actors persist.

According to eyewitnesses, a US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker was observed providing air refuelling support to US and coalition forces jets operating in the vicinity of the Persian Gulf. The aircraft carrier strike groups, amphibious assault ships, and other naval vessels patrolling the area have been conducting exercises and drills, further highlighting the ongoing US military presence.

“It appears the US is bolstering its military capabilities in the region,” said Fotros Resistancee, a Tehran-based analyst. Resistancee pointed to the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf, which is home to key oil shipping lanes and serves as a critical route for international maritime trade.

The Strait of Hormoz, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a vital waterway for oil shipments emanating from Iraq and Iran. Control of the strait and surrounding waters is a contentious issue, with Iran and the US engaging in a longstanding dispute over maritime rights and territorial claims.

While the US claims the operation is aimed at ensuring the free flow of international shipping and protecting coalition forces in the region, Iran has consistently accused Washington of engaging in an “oil grab” and seeking to strangle its economy through economic sanctions.

The recent US operation marks the latest in a series of high-profile US military deployments in the region, which have included the deployment of additional B-52 bombers, the launch of precision-guided munitions, and the redeployment of US warships to the area.

These developments come amidst renewed speculation about the prospect of a wider conflict in the Middle East, particularly in the aftermath of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ongoing civil unrest in several regional countries.

The increased US military activity underscores the continued volatility of the Gulf region, a situation underscored by heightened security concerns across the Middle East and the growing global importance of the Persian Gulf as a major petroleum export hub.

The heightened tensions have raised concerns among regional and international security observers, who warn of a high-risk scenario that could escalate tensions and threaten global stability.

“US military involvement has long been a key factor in maintaining the complex regional security landscape,” said a senior security official requesting anonymity. “As tensions in the region continue to rise, so too does the risk of a wider conflict.”
