UAE Flight Information Region Partially Closed Due to Air Traffic Management

The Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) Control Centre of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) within the United Arab Emirates has announced the partial closure of the Emirates Flight Information Region (FIR). This development aims to ensure safe navigation and efficient air traffic management within the UAE airspace. According to an official statement, air traffic has been restricted to specific arrival routes, with designations assigned to major airports across the country.

Under the new regulations, inbound aircraft are required to follow designated arrival paths to Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), Al Ain International Airport (AAN), Dubai International Airport (DXB), Sharjah International Airport (SHJ), Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (RKT) and Fujairah International Airport (FJR). These airports have been designated as key entry points to the UAE, with the goal of reducing congestion and maintaining high-altitude air traffic to designated flight corridors.

The GCAA and UAE Airspace Authority have reportedly taken these measures in response to growing air traffic demands and evolving navigation requirements amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to streamline operations and prioritize safety, specific flight route restrictions are in place for pilots planning international flights into the UAE, in effect reducing the risk of potential collisions between aircraft.

According to sources within the aviation sector, pilots of international flights are now required to be better informed of new restrictions and procedures to comply with these directives, to maintain a high level of safety while ensuring efficient air traffic management within the region.

Aviation authorities have stressed that compliance with the UAE FIR’s new restrictions is mandatory for pilots, while any attempts to bypass these rules may result in further measures being taken to mitigate risks. Additionally, the GCAA will provide pilots and other stakeholders with more detailed and accurate information regarding the revised flight paths through various communication channels.

This development underscores the importance of air traffic management in maintaining the United Arab Emirates’ position as a significant hub for global air travel and transportation.
