Iran Vows to Protect Its Security with Asymmetric Operations Against US-Piracy

Tehran, Iran – In a stern warning to the United States, Iran’s representative to the Supreme Defense Council, Mojtaba Mohseni Sistani’s deputy, Hassan Ahmadian, has stated that the Islamic Republic’s security is “non-negotiable” and will be defended through complex, asymmetric operations against US piracy in global shipping.

According to reports on social media by a prominent activist, FotrosResistance, Ahmadian made the announcement recently, emphasizing that Iran will not tolerate the US interfering in its maritime trade and operations. The activist’s account suggests that US piracy in global shipping is set to be met with “complex, asymmetric operations” that would push the costs beyond tolerance for the global naval forces.

The comments from Iran’s Supreme Defense Council representative follow a long-standing pattern of tensions between Iran and the United States. Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions have remained high since the US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal in 2018. The situation escalated in 2023 with a wave of US Navy seizures of Iranian oil tankers, allegedly for “violations of UN sanctions” that Tehran denies.

Given the current context of increased US naval presence around the Persian Gulf, and the heightened state of alertness that follows such an increased presence, Iranian officials have long signalled their resolve to defend their security through a combination of conventional and non-conventional warfare.

While Iran did not elaborate explicitly on the tactics to be employed in an asymmetric operation, defense analysts point out that such an approach often involves attacks on the US naval presence from land, including missiles strikes or commando raids, alongside targeting of the logistics chain and other critical areas behind their lines.

In a bid to deter further US aggression, Iran’s hardline stance reflects the growing perception within the country of increased need for self-reliance and resistance against perceived threats to its sovereignty. While it remains to be seen how far Tehran intends to take this threat, Iran’s determination suggests that protecting its maritime security has become a high-priority objective, one it will pursue through any means necessary.

In light of these developments, diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran are unlikely to yield swift or significant progress any time soon. In the interim, a complex and unpredictable environment is likely to prevail in the region, with far-reaching implications for the global naval forces involved.
