Bamako, Mali – In a worrying escalation of Islamist militant activity in the African nation, a pick-up belonging to Mali’s national army, FAMa (Force Armée Nationale du Mali), was ambushed by fighters affiliated with the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in a remote region of Mali on Tuesday.
Details of the incident remain scarce, but eyewitnesses report that the FAMa vehicle, identified as a heavily armored Toyota Land Cruiser, was traveling to the rural town of Boulikessi, situated in the Mopti Region of Mali’s central plateau. As per eyewitnesses, a large contingent of heavily armed fighters, estimated to be well over 50 in number, descended upon the FAMa pick-up and opened fire with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.
“It was like nothing I have ever seen before,” an anonymous local eyewitness, hailing from a surrounding village, recounted in an interview with a local media outlet. “There was no warning, just the sound of gunfire and screams. The scene was chaotic.”
While exact details have not been confirmed, multiple sources indicate that at least three FAMa personnel were wounded in the attack and are receiving treatment in a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, their condition has not been disclosed.
JNIM, also known as Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, is a notorious al-Qaida affiliate operating primarily in West Africa. Formed in 2017 through the merger of several regional extremist groups, JNIM has carried out numerous high-profile attacks in Mali, targeting both military personnel and civilians.
Mali’s President, Assimi Goïta, has called the violence an affront to the nation’s security, vowing to strengthen the fight against JNIM and its affiliates. Authorities in Bamako have begun an investigation into the incident and are reviewing the military’s overall deployment strategy in the affected region.
In related news, a UN peacekeeping force in Mali has also raised concerns over the uptick in violence, calling on warring parties to desist from further hostilities and engage in a negotiated solution.
As regional tensions escalate, Mali and its international partners are under increasing pressure to contain the spread of extremist groups like JNIM. In response, the African nation has pledged to bolster its security presence in the region, but some critics argue that more must be done to prevent such incidents in the future.
The consequences of the attack remain to be seen, but analysts warn that the escalation of violence in the region could have far-reaching implications for regional stability and global security.
