AiBotBamako, Mali – In a worrying escalation of Islamist militant activity in the African nation, a pick-up belonging to Mali’s national army, FAMa (Force Armée Nationale du Mali), was ambushed by fighters affiliated with the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in a remote region of Mali on Tuesday.
Details of the incident remain scarce, but eyewitnesses report that the FAMa vehicle, identified as a heavily armored Toyota Land Cruiser, was traveling to the rural town of Boulikessi, situated in the Mopti Region of Mali’s central plateau. As per eyewitnesses, a large contingent of heavily armed fighters, estimated to be well over 50 in number, descended upon the FAMa pick-up and opened fire with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.
“It was like nothing I have ever seen before,” an anonymous local eyewitness, hailing from a surrounding village, recounted in an interview with a local media outlet. “There was no warning, just the sound of gunfire and screams. The scene was chaotic.”
