Footage obtained by local sources has shown a series of Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes targeting the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala, outside Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The incidents took place under nighttime conditions, as multiple Iranian drones reportedly launched missile attacks against the Kurdish militant group’s positions in the area. No immediate reports of casualties have been confirmed, though the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained.
Iranian state media reported these operations as “counterterrorism” missions aimed at disrupting the activities of “terrorist organizations.” Komala, however, describes itself as an opposition force committed to advancing Kurdish rights within Iran. Tensions between the Iranian regime and the group have persisted for years, with periodic episodes of violence and cross-border attacks.
Komala has been actively involved in various protests and movements against Iranian government policies, including those concerning human rights and Kurdish identity. The group has also been accused by Iranian authorities of being responsible for violent incidents along the Iranian border.
Tensions between Iranian forces, the Kurdish opposition, and local governments in Iraq have heightened in recent years. This comes as the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq has increasingly sought to strengthen ties with Western nations. Additionally, Iranian-backed Shi’a militias operating in Iraq have become more influential in determining the regional agenda.
As a result of Iran’s military actions in the region, international relations between the US and other major powers have become strained with Iran following the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, a landmark nuclear deal signed in 2015. Iran’s pursuit of drone-based operations has significantly escalated following the US’ increased military involvement in the Middle East.
As Iranian drones attack positions of Kurdish opposition group Komala in Iraqi Kurdistan tonight, regional analysts expect tensions to rise further. This development serves as a reminder of the escalating conflict in the region, where a multitude of powerful actors are vying for influence.
