M5.0 Earthquake Hits Western Iran, No Immediate Reports of Fatalities

A moderate earthquake struck the western province of Gilan in Iran, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reporting a magnitude of 5.0. The tremors were felt approximately 90 minutes ago, with the epicenter located in the region of Kermanshah, which shares a border with neighboring Iraq.

According to initial reports, the earthquake occurred at 12:47 PM local time and was centered about 25 kilometers north-west of Kermanshah’s city center. The provincial authorities have issued an alert advising residents to remain indoors until the situation is deemed safe.

Iran is a seismically active country, situated on a fault line that spans the region. Over the years, the country has experienced numerous earthquakes, some of which have resulted in significant loss of life and property damage. However, the magnitude of the recent quake suggests that while potentially damaging, it may not have caused extensive destruction.

As rescue teams and emergency services rush to assess the damage, officials have confirmed that there are no reported fatalities yet. The Iranian Red Crescent Society and various other authorities have activated their emergency response systems, mobilizing personnel and equipment to affected areas.

Resident accounts describe the quake as having been moderate in intensity, with many residents reporting feeling a strong jolt. There have been reports of some damage to buildings, including partial collapses and shattered windows, but details remain scarce.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, local authorities have advised residents to remain calm and cooperate with rescue teams. “We urge citizens to stay indoors until the situation is under control and for rescue teams to have an unobstructed passage to assist those in need,” a spokesperson from the provincial administration said.

The Iranian government has assured citizens that a comprehensive assessment of the earthquake’s impact will be conducted as soon as possible, with further information to be released accordingly.

Residents in Kermanshah and surrounding areas have been warned to remain vigilant and to follow all instructions issued by local authorities.
