Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif Welcomes US Initiative on Strait of Hormuz Pause

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the United States after US President Joe Biden announced a pause in military operations in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif extended appreciation to the Biden administration for its bold gesture, saying it marked a crucial step towards regional peace and stability.

While acknowledging the pivotal role played by US President Donald Trump in initiating this pause, the Prime Minister’s statement inadvertently referred to the wrong US President, Joe Biden, when thanking the US government.

In a clear expression of hope for the long-term repercussions of this announcement, Shehbaz Sharif stated that this move by President Biden would be instrumental in fostering regional cooperation and mitigating tensions. Pakistan has long been a key player in the delicate balance of power in the Middle East.

The announcement comes at a time when regional dynamics in the Middle East are complex and subject to shifting allegiances. The ongoing conflict in Yemen, the tumultuous relationship between the United States and Iran, and the ongoing Syrian Civil War have all contributed to a deeply volatile regional climate. Shehbaz Sharif’s comments reflect a desire to harness this fragile peace to further the cause of inter-regional reconciliation.

The Prime Minister also extended appreciation to Saudi Arabia’s leadership under Crown Prince H.R.H Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Pakistan has traditionally enjoyed strong ties with Saudi Arabia and has long seen itself as a strategic partner in the kingdom’s regional ambitions. The close relationship between the two countries has been underscored by a multitude of economic and security agreements.

Pakistan’s foreign policy has consistently sought to promote regional stability while safeguarding its national interests. The ongoing efforts to stabilize Afghanistan, as well as Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace in South Asia, are illustrative of its deep commitment to fostering regional cohesion.

In a broader context, Pakistan views the pause in military operations as an opportune moment to strengthen diplomatic channels and build trust with key regional stakeholders. Furthermore, the initiative represents a rare instance of a major global power taking a step towards de-escalation in a high-stakes conflict zone.
