The United States Air Force is actively working towards completing the upgrades on the Boeing 747 aircraft gifted by Qatar, with the ultimate goal of having the aircraft join the prestigious Air Force One fleet by July 4. This move coincides with the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
According to Reuters, the aircraft was officially accepted by the White House in 2025 and is currently undergoing significant renovations to meet presidential standards. L3Harris, a leading aerospace technology company, is spearheading the upgrade process.
Upon completion of the upgrades, the newly refurbished aircraft will become an integral part of the Air Force One fleet. This prestigious fleet is responsible for transporting the President of the United States domestically and internationally.
While officials have confirmed that the aim is to have the aircraft ready by July 4, it is worth noting that the White House initially considered delivering the jet slightly earlier to coincide with President Donald Trump’s birthday on June 14. However, this timeline was ultimately set aside.
It is unclear whether the upgraded aircraft will replace the current Boeing VC-25A, which has been serving as Air Force One since 1987. The older aircraft has undergone several renovations and modernizations but still relies on outmoded communication technology and other outdated systems.
Once the upgrades are complete, the aircraft will be equipped with state-of-the-art communication systems, upgraded avionics, and other advanced features, significantly enhancing its operational capabilities. The integration of the Qatar-gifted aircraft will undoubtedly add significant muscle to the Air Force One fleet.
The United States Air Force is expected to conduct rigorous flight testing and certification procedures before handing the upgraded aircraft to the White House. The July 4 delivery date suggests that the Air Force is working hard to meet the ambitious deadline.
While the delivery timeline is subject to change, officials remain optimistic that the upgraded aircraft will be ready for operations by the time of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
