The actions, part of a larger dispute over land use and agricultural practices, are likely to escalate tensions between Israeli authorities and Palestinian farmers in the region.
According to eyewitnesses, dozens of Israeli military personnel descended upon the area, using heavy machinery to dismantle and destroy several greenhouses owned by local farmers. These structures, which have long provided a vital source of income for the Bardala community, have been the subject of a high-profile dispute in recent months.
The Israeli Defense Ministry has cited a number of infractions related to agricultural regulations as justification for the demolition, including alleged water mismanagement and failure to comply with land-use restrictions. However, Palestinian officials and community leaders have vehemently disputed these claims, describing the move as part of a broader effort to suppress Palestinian agricultural development in the Jordan Valley.
“This is a gross injustice,” said Raed Abu Rahma, a senior official with the Palestinian Farmers Union. “These greenhouses represent the only source of livelihood for many of our people, and their destruction is a clear attempt by Israeli authorities to undermine our economic prospects and drive us out of our ancestral lands.”
The destruction of the greenhouses has sent a shockwave through the regional farming community, with many fearing further crackdowns on Palestinian agricultural activity. Already, the Palestinian Farmers Union estimates that nearly 50 percent of the greenhouses in the Jordan Valley have been destroyed or damaged since 2006.
“We are facing an existential threat,” said Khalil Alqam, a Bardala resident whose family has operated one of the demolished greenhouses for over a decade. “Our way of life is being suffocated by constant harassment and demolition orders. It’s a nightmare we can’t escape, and one that is taking a devastating toll on our families and our economy.”
Regional observers warn that the demolition of the greenhouses in Bardala is likely to further exacerbate tensions between Israeli and Palestinian authorities in the West Bank. Already, both sides are grappling with a deepening economic crisis, compounded by a protracted Israeli-Palestinian blockade.
“This is not just about the greenhouses,” said Amjad al-Shobaki, a prominent West Bank analyst. “It’s about the systematic undermining of Palestinian agricultural activity in the Jordan Valley, and the erosion of our right to economic self-determination. The long-term consequences of this policy will be catastrophic, and it’s imperative that both sides take immediate action to address the underlying issues driving this crisis.”
