Rabat, Morocco – A large-scale search operation continues in the coastal waters off Tan-Tan, Morocco, where 600 personnel from the US military and their Moroccan counterparts are scouring the ocean for two American soldiers who lost their lives during a recreational hike on April 29th. The ongoing operation aims to recover the remains of the deceased and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
In a statement issued earlier this week, the US military confirmed that the two missing soldiers from a Marine Corps base in North Carolina had been taking part in a hike near the coastal city of Tan-Tan. The excursion, which involved several personnel, was conducted during their scheduled downtime. According to eyewitness reports, the men entered the ocean off the Moroccan coast, but failed to return.
A US Navy P-8A Poseidon, an advanced maritime patrol aircraft, has been deployed to aid in the search efforts, conducting multiple sorties in the waters off Tan-Tan. Moroccan rescue teams and ships have also joined the operation, along with the US military personnel, in what is one of the largest-scale collaborative search and recovery operations in recent times.
The incident has raised questions regarding the risks associated with recreational activities for military personnel on deployment. Military leaders have not yet issued official details regarding the investigation, saying only that they are fully cooperating with the Moroccan authorities in order to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The US military is working closely with Moroccan authorities, as stipulated by the countries’ ongoing military cooperation agreement, to locate the missing soldiers and bring closure to their families. Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident is underway to identify the causes of the tragic incident and any contributing factors that may have led to it.
In a statement, US military officials praised the professionalism and expertise displayed by the teams involved in the search and recovery operations, emphasizing the importance of the ongoing collaboration between the US military and the Moroccan authorities in this situation.
“We want to express our deepest gratitude to the people of Morocco and their military leadership for their support and assistance in this time of need,” the statement said, adding, “Our thoughts and condolences are with the families of the deceased during this difficult time.”
