A devastating Israeli airstrike has shaken the rural town of Houmin al-Tahta, located in southern Lebanon, after a car was targeted near the town’s entrance. According to the Lebanese National News Agency, all three passengers inside the vehicle lost their lives in the early hours of the morning.
The attack occurred at approximately 03:00 hours local time, and eyewitness accounts suggest that the Israeli military carried out the strike using aerial bombardment. Witnesses described hearing an explosion followed by an intense burst of gunfire, prompting widespread panic in the area.
The Lebanese government has condemned the attack, with Prime Minister Najib Mikati stating that such actions are “clearly a blatant aggression.” Lebanese President Michel Aoun has also publicly denounced the Israeli operation, asserting that its intention is to destabilize the region.
Lebanon’s Defense Minister, Maurice Slim, stated that Israel’s actions “will not deter Lebanon from asserting its sovereignty” in the southern region of the country, where Israeli forces have been known to conduct targeted operations. Slim called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its aggression and restore peace to the region.
Eyewitnesses reported that emergency services rushed to the scene, where they found the three victims inside the mangled wreckage. Rescue efforts were thwarted by the severe damage inflicted on the vehicle, with locals describing the scene as “chaotic and devastating.” Local hospitals have confirmed that three people have been killed in the attack.
The attack on Houmin al-Tahta represents the latest escalation in tensions between Israel and Lebanon, particularly in the border region where each nation has long claimed sovereignty. Relations between the two countries have been strained for decades, with disputes over territory and security arrangements continuing to plague efforts at normalization.
Regional analysts warn that the current tensions pose significant risks to regional stability and international security. The international community has called on both sides to exercise restraint, with diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation.
In a statement, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed concern over the growing tensions between the two nations and urged a peaceful resolution to ongoing disputes.
