A military conflict is believed to be escalating between Israel and Hezbollah militants following an announcement by the latter’s military branch that a “Merkava” main battle tank has been targeted and destroyed in the ‘Taybeh’ sector of southern Lebanon.
According to a statement released by Hezbollah’s Al-Manar media, the group claimed to have utilised an Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) to inflict the damage, as well as set the Israeli vehicle ablaze at 21:10 local time.
Hezbollah’s Al-Manar media released footage of what they described as the Israeli tank engulfed in flames, with the caption stating the mission as a demonstration of the “power and determination” of Hezbollah’s military forces. The footage showed a tank, described as a Merkava MK4 model, on fire after being hit by what Hezbollah’s media described as an ATGM. Smoke and flames could be seen emanating from the scene.
Israel did not issue an immediate response to Hezbollah’s claim at the time of publication. However, the Israeli military confirmed the incident via Israeli Radio Channel, saying that they were engaged with Hezbollah forces in an active area in Southern Lebanon.
A significant portion of this region has been a contentious area since its last conflict during the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel. In recent years, border skirmishes have seen the involvement of the Israeli military against Hezbollah forces within the region.
The region in question, also referred to as “The Red Line,” is considered an area of high tensions that serves as the focal point of disputes over the Israel-Lebanese border. An Israeli official in a recent speech urged Lebanon to take greater control over the activities of Hezbollah in this region.
Hezbollah has maintained the right to retaliate against any perceived encroachments on their territory with military force and is known for its robust and well-equipped military capacity. However, there is always uncertainty regarding the actual extent of any military damage or loss suffered by opposing forces, which in this case could not be verified immediately.
A heightened state of readiness seems evident in both sides amid these rising tensions in Southern Lebanon.
