In a strategic move to bolster its defense capabilities, the Belgian Armed Forces (BAF) has announced a significant restructuring of the 2nd Artillery Battalion of the 1st Brigade. As part of this transformation, the battalion is set to transition toward a more versatile and mobile artillery unit, integrating enhanced air defense capabilities.
According to sources, the battalion will comprise multiple branches of service, with the majority being air defense systems as opposed to traditional artillery. This shift reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare, where multi-role forces can respond effectively to an increased array of threats.
Under the revised structure, the 2nd Artillery Battalion will comprise a range of equipment, including 16 Caesar mk2 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzers, 12 Griffon MEPAC 120mm Self-Propelled Mortars, and 4 AN/TPQ-50 Counter-Battery Radars. To further augment its capabilities, the battalion will also be equipped with 12 Serval LAD (30mm cannon) and 12 Serval DSA (Mistral 3) air defense vehicles. The battalion will also possess 4 Serval Radar, in addition to a single Ground Master 200 Air Surveillance Radar which will enable advanced surveillance over the battlefield.
Transportation for the unit will be provided by an array of 110 diverse vehicles. These include a mix of military trucks, heavy haulage vehicles and support vehicles that play key roles facilitating the operational efficiency of the Battalion.
This shift toward enhanced air defense capabilities highlights the Belgian military’s commitment to maintaining a strong and responsive defense against a wide array of emerging threats. The restructured 2nd Artillery Battalion of the 1st Brigade will undoubtedly serve as an instrumental force in defending the nation’s interests, while also contributing to regional security cooperation through its membership in various international defense partnerships.
