At least 69 people have been confirmed dead following a brutal attack carried out by the Lendu militia group CODECO in Ituri province, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The assault, which occurred in late April, has resulted in one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent months.
According to reports, the CODECO militia attacked a rural community in the Djugu region of Ituri province, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of life in their wake. The scale of the violence was exacerbated by the delayed recovery of bodies, which was hindered by ongoing militant activity in the area.
“It’s a tragedy of monumental proportions,” said a local official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The people of Ituri have faced immense suffering, and this attack has only served to exacerbate the crisis.”
The CODECO militia has been accused of carrying out numerous attacks on civilians in the region, often targeting ethnic groups perceived to be enemies. The group, which emerged in 2016, has been linked to several massacres and displacement of communities in the area.
“It’s a clear case of ethnic cleansing,” said a local human rights activist. “The CODECO militia has shown a blatant disregard for human life, and it’s essential that international pressure is brought to bear to hold them accountable.”
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced numerous challenges, including conflict, disease, and poverty. The country’s eastern regions, which border countries with significant mineral deposits, have been particularly affected by violence and instability.
The attack in Ituri province serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. The United Nations has called for increased aid and support to the affected communities, emphasizing the need for a sustained and coordinated response to address the root causes of the conflict.
In a statement, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the DRC, Abdoulaye Bathily, said: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the senseless violence perpetrated by the CODECO militia. The international community must come together to support the people of Ituri and work towards a lasting solution to the conflict.”
As the international community grapples with the complexities of the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is imperative that immediate action is taken to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the CODECO attack.
