Tensions in the Middle East have risen significantly in recent weeks, with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military announcing a series of attacks on US military infrastructure in the region. Speaking on behalf of the Iranian Army, Brigadier General Mohammad Akrami-Nia revealed that, in the opening days of the conflict, Iranian fighter jets and tactical bombers conducted several sorties against US targets in Erbil, Kuwait, and Qatar.
According to General Akrami-Nia, the F-5E “Phantom” fighter jets were responsible for carrying out several successful sorties against US military targets in the region. Notably, the F-5Es, which have been operated by the Iranian military since the 1970s, successfully returned to base after completing their missions.
However, not all Iranian aircraft involved in the operation were as fortunate. General Akrami-Nia confirmed that two Su-24MK tactical bombers were shot down during the conflict. The Su-24MKs, which are Soviet-era aircraft, were reportedly approaching the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar when they were intercepted by a Qatar Emiri Air Force F-15QA “Ababil” fighter jet. The F-15QA is one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, with a range of advanced capabilities, including stealth technology and advanced radar systems.
Iran has long been a major user of Soviet-era aircraft, including the Su-24MK, and has faced criticism in recent years for its lack of modernization efforts. However, despite the loss of two Su-24MKs, the Iranian military has demonstrated that it remains a significant threat to US military interests in the region.
The conflict in the Middle East has been escalating for weeks, with both the US and Iran accusing each other of aggression. The Iranian military’s announcement of the sorties against US infrastructure is likely to further raise tensions and could lead to a significant escalation of the conflict.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate, it remains to be seen how the international community will respond to the growing tensions between the US and Iran. One thing is certain, however: the Middle East is on the brink of a major crisis, and the world will be watching with bated breath as events unfold.
In a separate statement, a spokesperson for the US Department of Defense confirmed that several US military bases in the region had been targeted by Iranian aircraft in the opening days of the conflict. However, the spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the sorties, citing operational security concerns.
As the conflict continues to escalate, it is clear that the Middle East is on the verge of a major crisis. The world will be watching closely to see how events unfold in the coming days and weeks.
