Tensions between Iran and the international community have escalated further as the country’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, vehemently criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), accusing it of transmitting ‘political messages’ regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing the controversy, Baghaei clarified the IAEA’s role as limited to ‘verification and monitoring’ of Iran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its nuclear development. He firmly stated that the agency should not engage in what he termed ‘unwelcome meddling’ in geopolitical issues such as the security of major shipping lanes.
The Strait of Hormuz has long been a subject of contention for both regional powers and global stakeholders due to its immense strategic and economic importance. The narrow waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is the sole maritime route between Europe, Asia, and Africa through Middle East waters, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil supplies passing through it.
Baghaei’s statement came amidst reports that the IAEA had made unsolicited public comments regarding the Strait’s safety and the alleged Iranian threats against international shipping. Iranian analysts suggest that this perceived intrusion by the IAEA is an attempt by Western powers to exert additional pressure on Iran, an already beleaguered nation facing rising inflation and crippling economic sanctions.
In his press briefing earlier this week, Baghaei unequivocally emphasized the Iranian government’s unwavering commitment to regional and global security. By stating that ‘diplomatic channels should be used to raise concerns,’ Baghaei effectively highlighted the Iranian stance that all nations should prioritize dialogue over inflammatory statements.
However, sources close to the negotiations indicate that Iran has repeatedly expressed concerns over the security of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz in response to reported US and Israeli threats against Iranian naval vessels. The Iranian government has insisted that these allegations are unfounded and meant to undermine diplomatic efforts.
In response to Iran’s latest criticism, the IAEA has maintained that its mission is solely focused on monitoring nuclear activities and that any public pronouncements about regional security are in line with its duty to provide accurate information.
Meanwhile, as global tensions persist, regional players and international organizations should engage in a more measured and constructive approach, according to regional experts.
