The Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has significantly augmented its influence in Washington, establishing a substantial lobbying network. This network is supported by substantial funds spent annually on law firms and consultants to advance the KRG’s interests in the US.
According to recently filed documents, the KRG’s contracts involve payments to the law firm ArentFox Schiff at the rate of $20,000 per month for Public Relations (PR) and communications services. Concurrently, the Chartwell Strategy Group has been contracted at the rate of $25,000 per month for similar services.
Additionally, a further contract worth $318,000 per year has been agreed upon with former Rudaw reporter Majeed Gly, who will function as a special advisor to the KRG. The specific role of this position has not been disclosed.
The expansion of the KRG’s lobbying network comes as the Kurdish Protection Action Council, a separate entity established by Entifadh Qanbar, has registered with the relevant authorities to undertake representation on behalf of the KRG’s Council of Ministers. This strategic move underscores the complex web of relationships that the KRG is fostering to enhance its position in United States.
It has been confirmed that a significant component in the KRG’s lobbying efforts involves personal connections with influential figures in Washington. David Tafuri, a seasoned lawyer, has been instrumental in securing the removal of the KDP and PUK from the US list of ‘terrorist organisations’ back in 2015, a notable achievement in the KRG’s bid to reposition itself in the US.
Through these various lobbying efforts, the KRG appears to be making concerted strides to bolster its standing in the US and ultimately safeguard its own interests. While some concerns have emerged over the implications of these efforts, the KRG is keen to assert its value as a valued partner in regional affairs.
The significance of the KRG’s lobbying presence in Washington is increasingly clear, with significant implications for the country’s future diplomatic and economic ties.
