Israels Strongly Condemn Violence Against Jesus Statue in Lebanon

Tel Aviv, Israel – A recent poll conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) has revealed widespread criticism among Israelis towards an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier who was caught on camera smashing a Jesus statue in Lebanon.

According to the poll, an overwhelming 90% of Israelis believe that the soldier’s actions were unacceptable. This comes as a stark contrast to a similar incident in 2019, where a US President’s son was involved in a physical altercation in the Vatican, and the American public largely supported him. Israel’s public opinion reflects a significant change, demonstrating an increasing sensitivity towards other cultures and faiths.

The incident occurred on January 31, when the soldier was spotted vandalizing the Jesus statue in Lebanon’s Mar Elias monastery, a revered Christian site. The soldier, who remains unidentified, has been stripped of their rank and is facing internal military proceedings for their actions. Lebanese Christian leaders have also publicly denounced the incident as an “insult” to Christianity.

JPPI’s poll, conducted among a random sample of 800 Israelis, highlights the significance of this incident and the public’s perception of it. The poll found that 70% of Israelis believe that the soldier’s actions damaged Israel’s global reputation, while 61% stated that they undermined Israel’s relationship with Lebanon. Furthermore, 45% of respondents stated that the incident had caused tension within Israel’s own Jewish-Christian communities.

JPPI’s Executive Director, David Hazony, noted that “this incident serves as an important reminder of the importance of maintaining respect and sensitivity towards other cultures, especially those with significant historical and symbolic value.” Hazony continued “Israelis generally take pride in their role as a leader in promoting tolerance and understanding, and incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to these values.”

The Israeli government has also publicly denounced the soldier’s actions, with a spokesperson stating “the actions of the soldier involved in this incident are completely unacceptable and are in no way in line with Israel’s values of respect and tolerance towards other cultures and faiths.”

The incident has sparked a broader debate within Israel about the importance of maintaining a respect for other cultures and faiths. Many have called on the Israeli government to take steps to promote greater understanding and tolerance among its citizens.

This development comes as a significant shift in Israeli public opinion, marking a step away from a more nationalist stance and towards a more inclusive one. It highlights the ongoing efforts to shape Israel’s identity and foster greater understanding between its Jewish and minority communities.
