Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang to Plead Guilty to Acting as Unregistered Foreign Agent for China

A prominent California official has reached a plea agreement to plead guilty to acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China, federal authorities announced Monday. According to sources, Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, a city located in Los Angeles County, agreed to the deal in connection with her alleged involvement in a covert campaign to disseminate pro-Beijing propaganda in the United States.

Beginning in late 2020, Wang collaborated with an associate to establish a fake local news site, U.S. News Center, which published content promoting China’s interests. The operation is believed to have been overseen by Chinese officials, with Wang and her associate occasionally submitting articles for approval before publication. This brazen campaign was allegedly part and parcel of a broader effort by China to influence American public opinion and undermine trust in the United States government.

Federal investigators began scrutinizing Wang’s activities in 2021, following a tip that the Arcadia mayor was involved in a clandestine operation designed to spread Beijing’s message to a domestic audience. An examination of Wang’s online activities revealed a trail of online publications, often masquerading as legitimate local news sources, but, in reality, merely mouthpieces for China’s propaganda apparatus.

As part of the plea deal, Wang has agreed to plead guilty to one count of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, a felony offense punishable by up to five years in prison. Additionally, Wang will be required to pay a fine and forfeit any proceeds obtained as a result of her involvement in the operation.

The case highlights the increasing concern over China’s attempts to meddle in American domestic affairs, using a variety of tactics, including the manipulation of public opinion, covert disinformation campaigns, and attempts to influence the policies of key politicians. Federal law enforcement officials have sounded the alarm on this growing threat, stressing the need for greater vigilance and cooperation between domestic agencies tasked with monitoring and mitigating foreign interference in U.S. affairs.

While Wang’s plea agreement serves as a concrete example of the risks associated with clandestine involvement in foreign operations, experts have cautioned that similar efforts are likely ongoing, and American authorities will need to remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent and counter Chinese interference in U.S. politics.
