TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – In a recent development that has raised eyebrows in the Israeli intelligence community, a series of mass SMS messages have been sent to Israeli phones, allegedly originating from the Islamic Republic of Iran. These messages contain an unusual invitation to recipients to cooperate in the intelligence field.
According to reports from Israeli telecommunications provider Cellcom, the messages, which have been circulating primarily in Hebrew and some English, claim to be from the Iranian government. The SMS messages, which appear to be part of a coordinated campaign, direct recipients to contact Iranian embassies or Iranian cyber operators online for further information.
The exact wording of the messages, leaked to Israeli media outlets, states: “The Islamic republic of Iran invites you to cooperate in the intelligence field. For cooperation, contact Iranian embassies in various countries, or one of the Iranian cyber operators online. Start building your future now.”
Israel’s Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Defense have issued a joint statement cautioning Israeli citizens to exercise extreme caution when receiving such unsolicited messages. “We urge all citizens to be vigilant and not respond to any suspicious messages, especially those claiming to be from foreign government agencies,” a spokesperson said.
Experts speculate that this latest move by Iran may be an attempt to exploit existing relationships with dual nationals or members of the Israeli Arab minority. “Iran has historically sought to maintain connections with Israeli citizens who may be sympathetic to their cause,” said Prof. Itai Bar-Sinai, a cyber security expert at Ben-Gurion University.
However, some Israeli intelligence officials believe this may be a more calculated effort to disrupt the Israeli intelligence gathering process, potentially by trying to recruit Israeli citizens to gather intelligence on behalf of Iran.
The Israeli government has assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation, and have put in place enhanced security measures to protect Israeli citizens from potential fallout.
It remains unclear what motivations lie behind this unexpected approach by Iran, or whether these messages represent a genuine attempt to build alliances or a ploy to manipulate Israeli targets.
