TEHRAN – In a stark counter to allegations leveled by Kuwait, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday firmly repudiated any claims that it was planning hostile actions against Kuwait, categorizing them as ‘entirely baseless’ and a blatant attempt at ‘political propaganda’.
According to reports, Kuwait earlier accused Iran of planning hostile actions, citing the presence of four Iranian nationals near Kuwaiti shores, an incident that has sparked diplomatic tensions between the two nations. However, in response to these claims, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement in which it denied all allegations.
“It is with great regret that we see the Kuwaiti government exploiting the incident for its own malicious purposes,” a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry stated, adding that the four Iranian nationals involved in the incident had indeed been conducting a routine maritime patrol.
The Iranian Ministry explained that their nationals had entered Kuwaiti waters solely due to a technical malfunction in the navigation system used onboard the vessel. According to Tehran, the Iranians had at no point intended to breach Kuwait’s territorial boundaries or engage in any activities that could be considered hostile.
Furthermore, Iran has strongly urged both its citizens and Kuwaiti officials to maintain calm and restraint in the face of these escalating tensions, emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation in strengthening mutual trust and cooperation.
The diplomatic row comes as a potential source of strain for both nations, which share significant economic ties in addition to their proximity in the highly sensitive Middle Eastern region. Kuwait has traditionally enjoyed a delicate balance of diplomatic relations with Iran, particularly in recent years amidst rising tensions in the area.
As Iran continues to rebuff the claims, diplomats across the region are keeping a close eye on how developments unfold. While tensions remain high, there seems to be a glimmer of hope that cooler heads will prevail and the issue can be resolved without further escalation.
