KYIV, UKRAINE – 13 May 2024 – Reports are emerging of a significant escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign against Ukraine, as multiple Shahed drones were detected in the skies above western regions of the country earlier today. According to eyewitness accounts and Ukrainian Defense Forces (UDF) sources, two distinct waves of Shahed drones were observed during the course of a few hours, with local authorities swiftly springing into action to mitigate the risk of damage and potential loss of life.
The first wave of drones was reported to have taken off from unidentified locations within Russian-occupied territory, heading towards the western front at approximately 09:00 local time. Witnesses described the aerial activity as “persistent and sustained,” with drones maintaining a steady pace and trajectory across the border. UDF officials confirmed that Ukrainian air defenders were mobilized in response, with various anti-aircraft systems and interceptors scrambled to engage the incoming threats.
However, the drones managed to evade initial defenses and continued their journey deeper into Ukrainian airspace. Several locations in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv regions were identified as targets, with residents alerted to the impending danger through emergency broadcasts.
In a rapid follow-up response, Ukrainian forces activated a second layer of air defenses, drawing on their arsenal of Patriot missile batteries and advanced surface-to-air missile systems. The UDF reported that several drones were successfully intercepted and destroyed, but concerns remain regarding the potential effectiveness of these systems against the sheer number of Shaheds involved.
The second wave of attacks, which began around 12:00 local time, saw drones converging from different angles, further testing Ukrainian air defenses. Although initial estimates indicate a significant number of drones were destroyed, the UDF warned that some drones remain airborne, posing a continued risk to civilians and critical infrastructure.
The assault comes as Ukraine grapples with an ongoing humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced or affected by the ongoing conflict. International allies condemned the latest escalation, calling on Russia to respect Ukrainian sovereignty and cease its aggression.
