The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed growing concern over recent reports of Hezbollah drone attacks and Israeli military activities in close proximity to UN positions. The latest developments have prompted UNIFIL to issue a formal protest to both the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israeli military, urging all parties to exercise caution and avoid operating near UN personnel and positions.
On 11 May, three drones believed to be of Hezbollah origin detonated mere metres from UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, Lebanon, prompting an immediate response from the peacekeeping mission. A few days earlier, on 10 May, a separate drone, later confirmed to be of Iranian manufacture, crashed in an open area. Preliminary findings suggest that Hezbollah was responsible for launching the drone.
The situation escalated further on 12 May when a drone exploded inside the UNIFIL headquarters, damaging several buildings. However, thankfully, no peacekeepers were injured in the incident. This escalation has raised concerns about the potential risks and consequences for UN personnel stationed in the region.
“UNIFIL has formally protested to the Lebanese Armed Forces and to Israel, reminding all parties of the need to exercise caution and respect the safety and security of UN personnel and positions,” said a statement issued by UNIFIL. The UN peacekeeping force has been present in Lebanon since 1978, with its main mandate being to maintain stability and security in the region.
Hezbollah’s increasing use of drone attacks has raised eyebrows among regional experts and diplomats, who have expressed concerns about the group’s expanding military capabilities. The recent incidents have also raised tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with the Israeli military maintaining a robust military presence in the region.
The UNIFIL protests to the Lebanese Armed Forces and Israel are part of ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the region and to ensure that all parties adhere to international laws and norms governing the use of force. As the situation continues to unfold, UNIFIL will remain closely engaged with all parties, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
In a statement, UNIFIL underscored the importance of upholding international norms and ensuring that the safety and security of UN personnel are protected. The UN peacekeeping force has a long history of working to maintain stability in the region and will continue to exercise its mandate to achieve this goal.
