Beirut, Lebanon – A Hezbollah spokesperson announced Tuesday that the militant group had successfully struck a Merkava tank in the town of Houla, located in the Lebanese border region, using an Israeli-built Firefly, also known as a ‘FPV drone’, at approximately 17:30. The attack marked a significant escalation in tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.
According to Hezbollah, the strike was carried out against a military convoy carrying a Merkava Mark IV tank near the town of Houla, situated some 20 kilometers north of the Israeli border. Eyewitnesses and local sources reported hearing explosions and gunfire in the area, though details of the damage or casualties sustained by the Israeli military remain unclear.
The Israeli military did not confirm the report, although it did acknowledge the attack, citing ‘operational activity’ in the area without providing further details. The Israeli military has previously stated its intention to prevent Hezbollah from establishing a strong military presence along the Lebanese border, a concern the militant group has repeatedly dismissed.
Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist organization backed by Iran, has been a vocal opponent of Israeli influence in the region. The group, which has been involved in various military campaigns with Israel since the mid-2000s, has maintained a significant military presence in southern Lebanon, where tensions often remain high.
This attack marks the latest instance of the Israeli military targeting Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. A series of recent incidents involving Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah positions and convoys within Syria have heightened tensions in the region.
While the incident remains under investigation, analysts see it as a demonstration of Hezbollah’s expanding capabilities in the use of advanced drone technology. Israel has long been critical of the group’s acquisition of advanced military equipment, which it views as a major threat to regional stability.
As the international community continues to monitor the situation, the incident raises questions about future Israeli-Hezbollah relations, which have long been marked by conflict and stalemate.
In response to this incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Hezbollah for ‘provoking regional instability’ through their recent actions. Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah maintained that the group remains committed to protecting Lebanese sovereignty and thwarting Israeli aggression.
This development comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, as Israeli officials continue to emphasize the military’s preparedness and capability to respond to perceived threats from the militant group.
