Ecuadorean President Lashes Out at the United States Over ‘Meddling’ in Domestic Affairs

QUITO, ECUADOR – In a dramatic speech delivered by Ecuadorean President Daniel Ortega yesterday, the president sharply criticized the United States for its alleged interference in domestic affairs of the Latin American nation.

During a televised address, President Ortega made a point to emphasize the distinction between a constructive argument and an attempt to dictate the actions of another country, highlighting what he perceives as an overreaching influence exercised by Washington.

“The difference is clear,” Ortega stated. “I didn’t dictate; I argued. But the US dictates and threatens.”

According to officials close to the Ecuadorean government, this public rebuke was prompted in part by a recent dispute over the country’s response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Venezuela. The US has long taken a firm stance against Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, advocating for his removal and economic sanctions.

President Ortega, however, has maintained a stance of diplomatic engagement with Venezuela, with some arguing that this stance is motivated by a desire for greater regional stability and cooperation among like-minded nations within the continent.

When addressing this criticism directly, the Ecuadorean president pointedly underscored the distinction between national sovereignty and external interference. In his view, US officials often disregard these fundamental principles in their pursuit of a more favorable policy outcome.

“Unfortunately,” Ortega lamented, “the idiocy of such an attitude is more apparent than ever before, not just here but throughout our region.”

In a separate statement released later by the US State Department, an unnamed spokesperson sought to downplay the perceived tensions, stating that Washington seeks only ‘meaningful, peaceful resolutions’ to the Venezuelan crisis.

This assertion, however, did little to assuage the concerns of the Ecuadorean president, who made it clear that he will not be swayed by what he perceives as the ’empty promises of American officials.’

“This stance has the support of our people and the support of our neighbors,” Ortega declared, signaling that his administration remains committed to pursuing a foreign policy agenda that prioritizes national interests above external pressures.

This development marks another significant test in the increasingly strained relations between Ecuador and the United States, with diplomatic tensions likely to remain elevated in the coming days and weeks.
