At a recent gathering of the ‘Faith and Freedom Coalition,’ leaders from various Christian denominations and right-wing organizations vowed to “make it clear” to those who rule against traditional Judeo-Christian values that “there will be consequences.”
The warning comes as a growing number of conservative Christian leaders are becoming increasingly vocal about their opposition to the ruling, which was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 1992. Many within the Christian right view Roe v. Wade as a major affront to their values and a “watershed moment” for the country that has been “sowing the seeds of destruction” for decades.
Beverly LaHaye, the founder of Concerned Women for America, a prominent Christian rights organization, told attendees at the gathering that judges who defy the moral teachings of the Christian faith are playing with fire. “Those who sit in judgment, who have been entrusted with power, yet fail to uphold the Judeo-Christian moral standard will have to face the music,” she warned.
Mike Huckabee, a former Governor of Arkansas and unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate, echoed LaHaye’s sentiments, stating that Christians who believe in traditional values will not sit idly by while their moral code is undermined by judges and politicians who seek to “erase the sacred from this nation.”
Other Christian right leaders such as Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, and Jim Wallis, President and CEO of Sojourners, also called on their followers to push back against what they view as an out-of-control judiciary that seeks to undermine Christian values. Perkins warned that the threat of judicial activism has led to “a very dark place” where America’s moral foundations are being “eroded at a rapid pace.”
While some Christian leaders have chosen not to comment on the controversy, many are privately urging their followers to take bold action in support of their cause. With the 2024 presidential elections on the horizon, this growing sentiment is set to become a heated topic on the campaign trail, as conservative Christian voters will undoubtedly demand a more activist judicial branch.
