G7 SUMMIT HEADCOUNTS: ‘YOU ARE 4 YEARS BEHIND’ – LEADERS WARN CHINA ON GREEN DEAL AMBITIOUS GOALS
In a stern warning to the world’s second-largest economy, G7 leaders on Wednesday cautioned China on the progress of its Green Deal ambitions, stressing that the nation is four years behind schedule in achieving its environmental goals.
The remarks came as China’s President Xi Jinping joined the G7 Summit via video link at the invitation of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. At the summit, world leaders from G7 countries – the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan – emphasized the importance of working together to meet the 1.5°C global warming target set at the 2015 Paris Agreement.
G7 officials, who had earlier released a draft communique in advance of the summit, highlighted the pressing need for urgent climate action, urging nations to step up their efforts and align with the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. They further emphasized that this year marked a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change, with the upcoming 2023 United Nations Climate Conference in Egypt serving as a platform to raise ambitions and accelerate the pace of implementation.
According to senior diplomats and government officials familiar with the matter, during the summit, G7 leaders expressed concerns over China’s sluggish progress in phasing down fossil fuel use, as well as its slow pace of development in clean energy technologies. While China was praised for its recent efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase its investment in renewable energy, G7 leaders still expressed disappointment with the nation’s overall performance in tackling climate change.
“We have been monitoring China’s progress over the past few years, and while we recognize its efforts, we are still concerned that China is running four years behind schedule in achieving its Green Deal goals,” said a senior G7 official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
China’s representatives at the summit, however, countered by arguing that the nation has made significant strides in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources, and urged G7 leaders to refrain from making unwarranted criticisms. They emphasized that Beijing would continue to pursue its Green Deal objectives, while emphasizing the need for international cooperation and support in addressing global climate challenges.
Amidst a heightened sense of urgency and mounting global pressure, China’s Xi Jinping acknowledged the pressing need for international cooperation in addressing the pressing issue of climate change, vowing that his nation would take a more active role in this effort. While the remarks brought a measure of hope and optimism to the proceedings, G7 leaders remain unconvinced, pressing China to redouble its efforts and live up to its Green Deal commitments.
