Washington, D.C. – In a statement that sends a strong message to Beijing, a senior US official has dismissed speculation that the United States would abandon Taiwan in the face of growing pressure from China.
“I don’t think the USA would give up on Taiwan,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue. “Our commitment to Taiwan’s security and stability remains unwavering, and we will continue to support the island nation in any way possible.”
The comments come as China continues to ramp up efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically and militarily. Beijing sees Taiwan as a renegade province that must be reunified with the mainland, by force if necessary, and has been steadily increasing its air and sea patrols near the island.
Despite the rising tensions, US officials have long maintained that Washington’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense is unwavering. In 1979, the US switched diplomatic recognition from the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland, but Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act, which ensures continued U.S. support for the island.
In recent years, the US has increased its military support for Taiwan, providing the island with advanced arms and equipment, including F-16 fighter jets and M1 Abrams tanks. The US has also strengthened its security ties with Taiwan through regular defense consultations and joint military exercises.
“We will continue to work with our Taiwanese partners to strengthen our security cooperation and to promote peace and stability in the region,” the US official said. “We believe that our partnership with Taiwan is an important part of our broader commitment to regional security and stability.”
China has consistently protested US involvement with Taiwan, viewing it as interference in its internal affairs. However, US officials say they have no intention of abandoning Taiwan and will continue to support the island’s defense.
“The US-Taiwan relationship is built on a foundation of mutual respect, trust, and cooperation,” the US official said. “We believe that our partnership with Taiwan is a key component of our broader commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security in the region.”
As tensions continue to rise between the US and China, the US commitment to Taiwan’s security remains a crucial aspect of the region’s dynamics. While Beijing may press for greater pressure on Taiwan, Washington’s stance on the issue suggests that the US will not abandon its ally.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will work with our partners in the region to ensure that our commitment to Taiwan’s security is maintained,” the US official said.
