A senior commander of the Iranian-backed Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah has been charged with conspiracy to carry out terrorist attacks in the United States, including against Jewish targets in New York City. According to a criminal complaint unsealed on Friday in Manhattan, Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, the commander in question, was detained in Turkey and handed over to U.S. authorities.
The investigation, which was reported by The New York Times, revealed that al-Saadi had been planning to kill Americans and Jews in Los Angeles and was actively working on an attack on a New York synagogue. This is allegedly part of a broader Iranian retaliation campaign that began in February. Prosecutors have indicated that al-Saadi was responsible for orchestrating at least 20 attacks in Europe and Canada since late February.
As a high-ranking member of Kataib Hezbollah, al-Saadi is known to have worked closely with the late Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani. This militia has been instrumental in carrying out repeated attacks on U.S. forces and has been a primary proxy for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. In 2009, Kataib Hezbollah was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government due to its activities.
According to court filings, al-Saadi communicated with operatives in the United States, Europe, and Canada, discussing plans for terrorist attacks. The specifics of these plans included attacks on targets in the United States, including a synagogue in New York City, and at least 20 additional attacks in Europe and Canada.
Kataib Hezbollah’s activities have been linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with the group seen as a proxy force for the Iranian government. The U.S. government has previously targeted Kataib Hezbollah leaders and operatives in its efforts to disrupt the group’s activities.
The charges against al-Saadi mark a significant escalation in the U.S. government’s efforts to counter the terrorist activities of Kataib Hezbollah. The move is seen as a key component of the U.S. strategy to address the threat posed by Iran-backed terrorist organizations.
Al-Saadi’s detention and subsequent extradition to the United States serve as a warning to other high-ranking officials within Kataib Hezbollah, highlighting the potential consequences of engaging in terrorist activities. As the global community continues to grapple with the threat of terrorism, the U.S. government’s actions against al-Saadi demonstrate its commitment to preventing and prosecuting terrorist attacks on its own soil.
The full extent of al-Saadi’s plans and the scope of Kataib Hezbollah’s operations will be subject to further investigation. As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the U.S. government is taking a robust stance against the activities of this Iranian-backed militia.
