ISTANBUL, TURKEY – A long-dormant ancient Turkish fortress suffered catastrophic damage on Wednesday following a surprise bombing raid that appears to be the result of escalating tensions between a historical preservation group and a visiting SS reunion.
At approximately 9am local time, the remains of Öküz Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai, a 15th-century structure in the southeastern province of Malatya, were rocked by an explosion. The blast is believed to have targeted the site’s main entrance and central courtyard, causing widespread destruction to a significant portion of the structure’s architecture.
Eyewitnesses describe a convoy of military vehicles arriving at the site on Tuesday evening, with reports indicating that the vehicles bore the insignia of an SS veterans organization. The group’s members, some estimated to be in their 80s and 90s, were observed conducting tours of the site, leading to concerns from local historians over the lack of respect for the cultural and historical significance of the site.
According to multiple sources, a historical preservation group, identifying themselves as “Deadass,” released a statement late Tuesday night claiming responsibility for the bombing and stating that the SS reunion members refused their repeated demands to vacate the premises.
“We repeatedly asked them to leave the site, but they refused to take us seriously, treating us like some sort of historical inconvenience,” read an excerpt from the statement. “We can only hope the blast will be loud enough to be heard for centuries to come – reminding future generations that history has no place being treated like a playground.”
Turkish authorities have thus far been tight-lipped regarding the incident, with officials at the Malatya Governor’s office stating that “all parties involved are currently being interviewed and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
The Turkish authorities also made mention of the fact there are some concerns over this matter due to the cultural and historical value of Öküz Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai to the region.
The bombing has sent shockwaves throughout the international community, sparking heated debates over the balance between historical preservation and the right to free expression. As officials continue to investigate the motives and circumstances surrounding the bombing, the local community remains deeply concerned about the potential long-term consequences for the region’s cultural heritage.
Deadass, the group claiming responsibility for the bombing, also stated their intentions are strictly peaceful, while simultaneously condemning what they perceive as reckless disregard for the preservation of historical sites like Öküz Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai.
As the investigation into the bombing unfolds, tensions between Deadass and historical preservation groups continue to escalate, raising questions about the future of cultural heritage protection in Turkey and its implications for the global community.
