US officials, citing classified intelligence, have confirmed that Cuba has acquired more than 300 military drones from Russia and Iran since 2023. The development has prompted growing concerns within the American military and intelligence communities about the potential risks posed by an expanded Cuban military capacity, particularly in the vicinity of Guantanamo Bay.
According to reports, the acquired drones include models capable of carrying out reconnaissance, surveillance, and potentially even strike missions. Given the proximity of the drones to Guantanamo Bay, a US naval base and detention facility located in southeastern Cuba, officials fear that the drones could be used to gather intelligence or stage attacks against the base or nearby US naval vessels. Key West, Florida, which is situated off the coast of Cuba, is also reportedly viewed as a potential target.
US officials have indicated that the growing Iranian and Russian military presence in Cuba is seen as an escalating security threat. The Trump administration, during its final months in office, began to escalate public criticism of Russian and Iranian involvement in Cuba, citing national security concerns.
A senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, characterized the intelligence reports on the drone acquisitions as “concerning” and emphasized that the US remains vigilant in monitoring the situation. “We’re watching this closely,” the official said. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and security of our service members and citizens in the region.”
The Cuban military, which has historically been equipped with Soviet-era equipment, is undergoing significant modernization efforts, with assistance from Russia and Iran. US officials acknowledge the Cuban military’s increasing capability but emphasize that the new drone acquisitions pose a heightened threat to regional security.
The acquisition of military drones is part of a broader trend of expanding military cooperation between Russia and Iran, with both countries increasingly aligned on security and geopolitical issues. This trend has raised concerns among Western powers, who see it as an attempt to counter US influence in the region.
As the US and its allies continue to monitor the situation, officials are urging restraint and caution. “We’re not taking any options off the table,” the senior defense official said, when asked if the US is considering a response to the expanded Cuban military capabilities.
