A shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has left three people dead, sparking widespread condemnation and horror. However, a reaction to the incident from a confidant of former US President Donald Trump has drawn intense scrutiny, with many criticizing her comments as Islamophobic and incendiary.
Laura Loomer, a conservative activist and self-proclaimed Trump loyalist, took to social media to describe the Islamic Center as “evil.” In a series of tweets and posts, Loomer appeared to justify the shooting, claiming that the mosque’s worshippers were a threat to American lives and suggesting that federal authorities should have conducted a raid on the site.
“We know that the Islamic Center of San Diego is an evil institution,” Loomer tweeted. “Their so-called ‘place of worship’ is actually a hotbed of radicalization, and the feds should’ve raided it a long time ago.”
Her comments drew swift and scathing criticism from anti-hate groups, Muslim advocacy organizations, and several of her fellow conservative commentators. Many condemned Loomer’s comments as a clear example of Islamophobia, pointing out that the shooting was an outrageous act of violence that had nothing to do with a legitimate threat to public safety.
“This kind of rhetoric is exactly what fuels hatred and violence,” said the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Nihad Awad. “It’s appalling that a high-profile figure like Laura Loomer would use such divisive language to justify a horrific act of terrorism.”
The Islamic Center of San Diego has been a cornerstone of the local Muslim community for over two decades, offering educational programs, cultural events, and community services to people of all faiths and backgrounds. In the aftermath of the shooting, the mosque’s leadership has called for calm, prayer, and greater dialogue between faith communities.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of life,” said the center’s executive director, Ammar Amonette, in a statement. “We urge our community to come together in solidarity, prayer, and support for the victims and their families.”
In an effort to contain the fallout, Loomer has since deleted several of her tweets and has been accused of hiding behind the veil of “free speech” to justify her incendiary comments. Trump supporters have also rallied around Loomer, defending her right to express her opinions, even if they are unpopular or offensive.
“This is just another example of the hate and division that seems to be seeping into the very fabric of our society,” said a spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a national organization that campaigns against hate and extremism. “We condemn these vile comments from Laura Loomer, and urge her and others to engage in constructive and respectful dialogue that promotes understanding and inclusivity.”
