Nigerian Armed Forces, in collaboration with U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), have carried out successful joint counterterrorism strikes in northeastern Nigeria, achieving a significant milestone in the fight against Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). As of today, the operations have resulted in the reported death of 175 ISWAP militants.
According to the military, the joint operations targeted and destroyed ISIS checkpoints, weapons caches, logistics hubs, equipment, and financial networks. Additionally, the operations led to the killing of several senior ISWAP figures, including the group’s leader, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki. Al-Minuki was instrumental in the areas of financing, recruitment, logistics, and external attack planning.
Furthermore, other high-ranking ISWAP members who were killed in the operations included Abd-al Wahhab, responsible for coordinating attacks and distributing propaganda; Abu Musa al-Mangawi, a senior ISWAP member; and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, identified as a senior media production manager and close associate of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.
The success of these operations marks a significant victory for the Nigerian military and its international partners in the ongoing struggle against terrorism in the region. The targeted elimination of senior ISWAP leaders will likely disrupt the group’s operational capabilities and create uncertainty within its ranks.
The U.S. Africa Command has been actively engaged in supporting regional counterterrorism efforts, including working closely with the Nigerian military. AFRICOM’s efforts have been instrumental in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to tackle terrorism and address security challenges in the region.
The impact of these joint operations on regional security will be closely monitored, as the effects of this significant blow to ISWAP’s leadership and infrastructure begin to manifest. As the region enters a critical phase in the fight against terrorism, it is essential to recognize the importance of continued international cooperation in achieving a lasting peace and stability in northeastern Nigeria.
In a statement, Nigerian military officials acknowledged the significance of this achievement, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and collaboration in combating terrorism. This joint success serves as a testament to the effectiveness of regional and international cooperation in addressing shared security concerns in the region.
