Tehran, Iran – In a bid to preserve the traditional spirit and mystique surrounding one of the world’s oldest and most revered bathhouses, Iranian authorities have enforced a strict code of conduct at the historic Hammam Mansoury, a centuries-old public bath complex in the heart of Tehran.
Established in the 1820s during the Qajar dynasty, Hammam Mansoury is not only a testament to the region’s rich architectural heritage but also a vital part of Iranian culture, where steam baths, saunas, and water treatments have long been revered for their therapeutic benefits and social value. In accordance with the ancient traditions of hospitality and respect that are deeply ingrained in Muslim heritage, the authorities have now implemented measures aimed at restoring an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence within the complex.
The new rules, as announced by Tehran’s local government, emphasize the importance of maintaining a silent and respectful demeanor throughout the Hammam’s premises. Visitors have been warned against the use of mobile phones within the bath facilities, where any form of photography is strictly prohibited. Moreover, staff and management have been instructed to discreetly intervene in cases of excessive noise or any form of harassment, with offenders subject to temporary eviction or, in severe cases, permanent banishment from the premises.
In a statement, Tehran’s Director of Cultural Heritage emphasized the need to preserve the traditional Hammam experience for future generations. “These rules are designed to restore the essence of the Hammam Mansoury’s mystique, which lies, in part, in its history, and in part, in its quiet yet deeply spiritual ambiance, allowing visitors to rejuvenate their bodies and refresh their senses in the company of like-minded patrons.”
In an interview with local media, Hammam Mansoury’s Manager stated that he had received an overwhelmingly positive response from regular visitors who recognized the need for stricter rules. “We’re not merely enforcing silence; we’re creating an oasis where time stands still, where strangers unite in their quest for serenity and spiritual rejuvenation,” he explained.
The implementation of these regulations has led some critics to accuse Iranian authorities of overstepping their bounds, citing concerns that such rules might stifle free speech and limit freedom of expression within public spaces. However, many locals appear to view the initiative as a necessary step in preserving a cherished aspect of Iranian cultural heritage.
While some have expressed concern over the new restrictions, many patrons of the Hammam express gratitude for the return to order and the chance to rediscover the timeless allure of this ancient place.
