Bahrain Imposes Stringent Sentences on Suspects Linked to Iranian Attacks
Manama, Bahrain – In a marked escalation of measures to counter perceived internal threats, a Bahraini court has handed down sentences to dozens of defendants accused of providing support to Iranian attacks on the kingdom. The trial comes amidst a heightened climate of tension between Bahrain and Tehran, which accuses the Gulf state of colluding with foreign powers to destabilize its regional influence.
The latest phase of the ongoing crackdown yielded convictions against 10 defendants, who were handed prison terms of up to 10 years. Foreign nationals among those sentenced reportedly face deportation, further heightening concerns about Bahrain’s handling of its migrant population. In a bid to address these fears, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry has pledged to provide consular support to foreign nationals facing repatriation, although it remains unclear how many countries have accepted such guarantees.
In an earlier phase of the trial, Bahraini courts dealt particularly harsh sentences to five defendants, including two Afghan nationals, who received life imprisonment for collaborating with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Another 25 defendants received prison terms ranging from one to 10 years on similar charges.
While the Bahraini government maintains these sentences are justified by the severity of the allegations, human rights groups have expressed concern about the lack of transparency and due process in these proceedings. The Bahraini opposition, which has been embroiled in a protracted struggle with the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty, claims the trial is another example of the regime’s attempts to silence dissent through repression.
Meanwhile, a separate wave of measures aimed at countering perceived Iranian influence has led to Bahrain stripping the nationality of 69 individuals accused of “glorifying” attacks on the kingdom. This development has sparked a wider debate about freedom of expression in the Gulf state and its implications for the human rights and personal freedoms enjoyed by Bahraini citizens.
The tensions between Bahrain and Iran have escalated in recent years, mirroring a broader conflict between the two rival regional powerhouses. The Bahraini government, seeking to reinforce its credentials as a loyal ally of the United States and other Western powers, has long portrayed Iran’s influence in the kingdom as a strategic threat that necessitates extraordinary measures to counter such perceived malevolent designs.
