In a recent development, an Indian-origin individual has publicly acknowledged and embraced the name ‘Aryan’, which has been at the centre of controversy in recent times. The term has been associated with the Nazi ideology in Europe but in India has different origins and connotations.
Amarjeet Singh, a 35-year-old engineer from Mumbai, made headlines recently by stating that he is proud to bear the name ‘Aryan’. Singh, who hails from a conservative Punjabi family, said that the decision to bear the name was made by his parents, who chose it from a list of popular names for their children.
Singh stated, “I was born and brought up in this name. I have never associated it with any negative connotations. My parents had chosen this name for me, and I have grown up with it. I see nothing wrong in being proud of my identity, and my name is a part of it.”
The debate surrounding the name ‘Aryan’ gained international attention in 2020, when India’s Education Secretary, Annapurna Devi, faced a backlash for her statement that the term ‘Aryan’ referred to the ancient Indian or Indo- European people. The statement was met with criticism, with some arguing that the term had been hijacked by the Nazi regime in Germany and used to promote an ideology of racial superiority.
Singh acknowledged the controversy surrounding the name but maintained that it was not his concern. “I am proud to be an Indian, and I am proud of my heritage. If some people choose to associate this name with negative connotations, that’s not something I can control. I am who I am, and my name is a part of it.”
Singh’s decision to publicly announce his name has sparked a debate on social media, with some people expressing their support for him, while others have criticized him for not being sensitive to the international connotations of the term.
Dr. Sumeet Jain, a sociology professor at the University of Delhi, commented on the issue, saying, “This is a complex issue, and there’s no straightforward answer. While the term ‘Aryan’ has negative connotations in Europe, it holds different meanings in India. Singh’s decision to publicly acknowledge his name is a reflection of his identity, but it’s essential to be aware of the various perspectives surrounding this term.”
As the debate surrounding the name ‘Aryan’ continues, Singh remains steadfast in his decision to proudly bear his name, which has become a topic of discussion in both India and internationally.
