Royal Air Force Plane “Dangerously Intercepted” By Russian Aircraft Over Black Sea

A recent confrontation between a Royal Air Force reconnaissance aircraft and Russian fighter jets over the Black Sea has raised concerns about the escalating tensions between Russia and the Western Bloc. According to a statement released by the British Ministry of Defence (MoD), a Royal Air Force RC-135W Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft performing routine operations in support of NATO’s eastern flank was engaged by Russian Su-35 and Su-27 fighter jets.

The incident occurred in April, although the exact date is not specified, while the RAF aircraft was conducting a mission to gather intelligence and assess military activity in the region. The MoD stated that the RAF aircraft was subject to a “dangerous intercept” by the Russian fighter jets, with one of the Su-35 jets narrowly passing within six metres of the British plane.

This aggressive behaviour triggered the RAF aircraft’s onboard emergency systems, which would have automatically activated the plane’s defences and prepared it for potential hostile action. The crew on board remained safe throughout the incident, as the plane operated correctly and carried out the programmed emergency procedures.

The incident has been described as a “flagrant breach” of international standards and agreements governing military-aircraft interactions, particularly Article 3 of the Budapest Memorandum, which requires the signatory parties, Russia included, to refrain from conducting “interceptions that endanger the safety of an aircraft.”

While British officials have maintained that the British aircraft was conducting a legitimate reconnaissance mission, its proximity to NATO’s eastern flank has heightened the already strained relations between Russia and the alliance. NATO has been increasing its military presence in Eastern Europe in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and ongoing military interventions in Ukraine.

In light of the incident, NATO officials have stated that they continue to engage with Russia to promote de-escalation and ensure safety in the region. This includes efforts to enhance military-to-military communication and increase transparency in regards to military activities and operations.

The incident highlights the fragile state of international relations currently, particularly along NATO’s east flank, as well as the ongoing tensions and aggressive actions between Russia and the Western Bloc.
