Tampa, Florida – In a stern statement on social media, newly elected U.S. Representative for Florida’s 19th Congressional District, Byron Donalds, has made it clear that the United States will not cooperate with a new Cuban dictatorship. The strong words come as Cuba is poised to potentially elect a new leader to the presidency following the health issues of its long-time ruler, Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The full statement from Representative Donalds reads: “The Cuban Regime has to end. Florida will fully cooperate with a FREE Cuba. We WILL NOT cooperate with a new dictatorship.”
These comments reflect the growing frustration felt by Cubans and their international supporters with the authoritarian rule that has plagued the island nation since Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959. In recent years, protests and demands for democratic change have only intensified.
As a Representative for the state of Florida, which is home to a large and influential Cuban-American population, Mr. Donalds’ stance on this issue holds significant weight in American politics. The community has long advocated for a transition to democracy and freedom in Cuba, with many residents having family ties to the island.
In a wider context, the current situation in Cuba has also sparked debate about the future of U.S. policy towards the island nation. The Trump administration had re-established a hardline stance against the Cuban government, with several notable policies implemented in an attempt to pressure Díaz-Canel’s regime to make concessions. However, under President Biden’s administration, the focus has shifted towards a more nuanced approach that combines diplomatic engagement and humanitarian aid.
It remains to be seen whether Representative Donalds’ statement will lead to a significant shift in U.S. policy towards Cuba. However, his words undoubtedly reflect a widespread sentiment within the Cuban-American community and the broader United States political establishment.
“We can no longer condone the regime’s authoritarian rule,” said Maria, a Tampa-born Cuban-American and constituent of Representative Donalds. “It’s time for a change, and I’m glad that our Representative agrees.”
