U.S. Air Campaign Against Iran Costs Billions, Report Reveals

A newly released report from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has shed light on the extensive cost of Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. air campaign against Iran that commenced in early March 2023. Operation Epic Fury, which has seen 42 aircraft engaged in combat activities, has resulted in a staggering expenditure of $2.6 billion in equipment.

The report, authored by CRS analysts, estimates that the operation’s costs will continue to climb in the coming months, with potential additions of up to $1.2 billion in ongoing maintenance and repair costs for the deployed aircraft fleet. These expenses, coupled with existing operational costs, will significantly surpass the reported $2.6 billion figure.

According to the CRS report, the U.S. military has allocated substantial resources for the operation, including the deployment of F-35 fighter jets, F-15C Eagle fighter jets, and MQ-9 Reaper drones. These advanced aircraft, used in the air campaign against Iranian targets, have been the mainstay of U.S. airpower.

The operation, described by senior military officials as a targeted campaign aimed at mitigating Iranian military capabilities, has seen its costs escalate rapidly in recent weeks. Sources within the Pentagon have revealed that the rate of expenditure has exceeded original projections, fueling concerns within the U.S. legislative branch about the financial sustainability of the operation.

In a statement to the CRS, a senior U.S. military official described Operation Epic Fury as a “highly complex and dynamic campaign.” The official highlighted the logistical and financial burden of sustained air operations, stating that “every mission requires substantial resources, including fuel, spare parts, and crew support.”

The CRS report is expected to fuel a growing debate within the U.S. Congress about the long-term financial implications of Operation Epic Fury. Some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the cost of the operation in relation to the overall U.S. defense budget, which is already under intense scrutiny due to rising military spending.

In response to the report, a spokesperson for the Pentagon stated that “Operation Epic Fury remains a critical component of the U.S. strategy to counter Iranian military aggression.” The spokesperson emphasized the importance of ongoing operations, stating that “our ability to maintain a credible deterrent is a vital element of regional stability.”
