MIDDLE EAST ANALYSIS: Lebanon President Accused of Submission to US Demands and Normalisation with Israel

A recent report from Al-Akhbar, a leading Lebanese newspaper, has sparked a heated debate in the Middle East, accusing President Joseph Aoun of surrendering to the demands of the United States and adopting a stance that views Hezbollah as a threat to be eliminated. According to the paper, Aoun’s diplomatic efforts have prioritised direct talks with Israel, with the Lebanese President allegedly willing to hold a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, sources suggest that regional leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, intervened to prevent Aoun from pursuing negotiations with Israel. The two Arab leaders are said to have feared the repercussions of such a move on Aoun’s presidency, given the widespread opposition to normalisation with Israel within Lebanon.

The revelations raise further questions over the role of the Lebanese government in facilitating Israeli military operations against Hezbollah. According to Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, the government’s decisions are aimed at providing a smokescreen for Israeli military aggression, with negotiations representing a “forced option” for Lebanon. This assertion has reignited concerns over the influence of external powers on Lebanon’s domestic politics.

Meanwhile, a six-member delegation from the Lebanese military has completed preparations to visit the Pentagon for technical discussions on ceasefire implementation and the proposed timetable for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. The talks, reportedly aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the United States, have sparked criticism among domestic circles, with many viewing them as an attempt to legitimize Israel’s military presence in the region.

As tensions escalate in the region, the Al-Akhbar report has reignited a contentious debate over Lebanon’s alignment with the United States and its stance towards Israel. The controversy is sure to have far-reaching implications for the country’s domestic politics, regional alliances, and its relations with Iran-backed Hezbollah. The extent to which President Aoun’s alleged capitulation to US demands will resonate with the Lebanese people and impact the country’s strategic position in the Middle East remains to be seen.
