EBOЛА OUTBREAK INTENSIFIES IN DRC AS WHO UPGRADES SEVERITY TO “VERY HIGH”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded the severity of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from “high” to “very high.” This decision comes in response to a recent surge in the number of cases and deaths reported in the affected regions.

According to the WHO, the updated classification is based on an increased number of reported cases over the past 21 days, with a total of 136 confirmed cases and 77 reported deaths as of May 16, 2024. This represents a significant increase from the previous reporting period, highlighting the rapidly evolving nature of the outbreak.

The WHO has expressed concerns about the ongoing transmission of the virus, particularly in the health facilities of the affected areas. In the past week alone, there have been seven reported cases among healthcare workers, further exacerbating the challenges posed by the outbreak.

“We acknowledge the efforts of the DRC Ministry of Health and partners in responding to this outbreak, but we must continue to escalate our response to contain the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “We urge all those involved in the response to maintain their vigilance and work together to prevent further transmission.”

The WHO’s revised classification comes as the international community has mobilized resources to support the DRC’s response efforts. The United Nations has pledged additional funding to enhance the deployment of epidemiological teams, improve contact tracing, and support the distribution of personal protective equipment to healthcare workers.

In light of the upgraded severity classification, the WHO will continue to provide technical assistance to the DRC government and partners to enhance the outbreak response, including strengthening of surveillance and investigation, improving contact tracing and infection prevention and control, as well as enhancing public awareness and community engagement.

The WHO has called upon the international community to provide additional support to the DRC’s efforts to contain the outbreak, acknowledging the critical role that global coordination and collaboration will play in bringing the situation under control.

As the WHO continues to monitor the outbreak, it emphasizes the need for sustained vigilance, enhanced preparedness, and collective action to prevent further transmission and protect vulnerable populations.

In the meantime, the DRC government and the WHO have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the importance of practicing personal hygiene, wearing protective gear, and reporting any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC remains a complex challenge that demands a unified and sustained global response to control its spread and mitigate its devastating impact.
