MILITARY TIES DEEPEN: Vietnam Edges Closer to BrahMos Missile Deal with India

In a significant development for regional military dynamics, Vietnam is on the cusp of signing a deal with India to acquire BrahMos cruise missiles. This move follows India’s export of the supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines last year, marking a new chapter in the country’s growing defense partnerships with Southeast Asian nations.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Vietnam’s military has been engaging in talks with Indian defense officials over the past 18 months to acquire the BrahMos missiles, which have a range of over 290 kilometers and can carry conventional as well as nuclear warheads. The proposed agreement is expected to provide Vietnam with a state-of-the-art defense system capable of countering the growing military capabilities of China, its strategic rival in the region.

Vietnam has been actively seeking to bolster its military capabilities to counterbalance China’s rising influence in the South China Sea, where both countries have competing territorial claims. In recent years, Vietnam has been modernizing its military by acquiring advanced defense systems, including Russian S-400 air defense missiles, Su-35 fighter jets, and P-800 Oniks anti-ship missiles.

The acquisition of BrahMos missiles would further enhance Vietnam’s military capabilities, making it a more formidable force in the region. While there are no officialconfirmations from either India or Vietnam on the status of the negotiations, defense analysts believe that the agreement is imminent.

“BrahMos is a game-changer in military capabilities, and Vietnam’s decision to pursue this deal reflects its growing concern about China’s military expansion in the region,” says Ankit Panda, a defense expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

India, which has emerged as a key defense exporter in recent years, has been actively pursuing partnerships with Southeast Asian nations to counter China’s growing influence in the region. In addition to the Philippines and Vietnam, India has also been negotiating defense deals with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The proposed BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam will not only deepen military ties between the two countries but also provide a boost to India’s defense exports and reinforce its position as a major defense player in the region.
